Spotlight on Hoop Tape Dispenser

Lets start with a (very) short history and evolution of tape dispensers, shedding light on their humble beginnings and their journey to becoming essential tools in every workspace. In 1930 the first sellotape as we know it was invented (Scotch Cellulose Tape, later renamed Scotch Transparent Tape). It then took a full 2 years before what we know as tape dispensers then came to market. Early forms of tape dispenser were mostly either weighted or clamped to the side of a desk before handheld options became available.

Originally designed to streamline the process of sealing packages and securing documents, these tools have evolved over time, embracing both form and function. The tape dispenser started off very much as an industrial product found in packing facilities and offices as such taking very brutalist and utilitarian forms, but in time the tape dispenser also became a domestic favorite and styles adapted to fit with a household aesthetic.

Fast forward to modern day and the lead up to Christmas. Many of us take for granted the ease a good sellotape dispenser gives us when wrapping presents - pre 1930 before the invention of modern tape it would have been common to wrap presents using string or sealing wax, the paper would have often been tissue or thick brown paper and it wouldn't have been unheard of to use cloth or handkerchiefs even. Nowadays we are spoilt for choice when it comes to wrapping presents, but in the Andhand studio we embrace a minimal approach to our gift wrapping.

5 Top Tips for wrapping the perfect present

  1. Pick Strong, Simple Paper: Choose solid colors or subtle patterns like plaid or kraft paper. Keep it sturdy, so it doesn’t tear easily.
  2. Measure Properly: Use enough paper to cover the gift, but avoid excess. A little overlap is fine, but don’t go overboard.
  3. Neat Folds: Make sharp, clean folds to keep the wrapping tight. Press down with your fingers or a ruler to create crisp lines. Fold the corners neatly by pushing in the edges to create sharp, smooth triangles.
  4. Don't over tape: Just one well applied piece of tape per seam is all that's required, have your tape dispenser close to hand for when you've aligned your paper perfectly.
  5. Finish Strong: Add a simple ribbon or tag, or even create your own upcycled tags by carefully cutting out sections of last years Christmas cards. A clean, straightforward look goes a long way in making your gift stand out.

A little about Hoop Tape Dispenser

Design:

We created the hoop tape dispenser with the most minimal of forms, a simple clean line bends through the air to create the two working ends of the dispenser - the holder and the cutter. The tape is held on a static spool sideways rather than upright, this helps give the tape dispenser a really low center of gravity making it  stable as well as creating a pleasing composition.

Anodizing is utilized to color and finish our tape dispensers, providing a subtle satin texture. Available colors include slate grey, gold, silver, and black.
